Filamentous, a collaborative project presented by me, Kelley Aitken, and my friend, the bio-artist Elaine Whittaker, took place in the fall of 2022 at The Red Head Gallery, a collective exhibition space in downtown Toronto where Elaine is a member. We focussed on the events and concerns of the pandemic, drawing on the daily rituals that became part of our lives and fed our art practices during that extended period. The installations, paintings (including sun prints and cyanotypes), sculptures and found objects in the exhibition capture the quiet details and the importance of connecting with nature while coping with isolation. During this time, we found lessons of endurance in our gardens, the strength garnered in caring for family and friends, and hope through writing and creating art.
